Wallowa County Favorites
Being born and raised here, Wallowa County is a special place to me. It is a privilege to share the things that make me love this place, and what makes coming home from our adventures worth the drive!
Favorite view: When you come in from Lewiston, Idaho, (Hwy 3), you drop off a hill called Snow Hallow Hill. When you look south, the view of the Eagle Cap Mountains surrounded by the timber on both sides is breathtaking! This is my favorite Wallowa County view!
Favorite places to ride: I love riding the East Moraine of Wallowa Lake. There are many routes to the top and back down, and the view from the top is a stunning view of the Eagle Cap Mountains.
Another favorite ride is private land of the Bennett's near the Lostine River Canyon. You can ride all day long for the whole summer and never ride the same trails/roads twice. I like riding roads verses trails because I like being able to ride next to friends and share stories and laughs.
Favorite Country: Zumwalt. The Zumwalt country is so close to the edge however so far away! My favorite way to spend the day is to move cattle for local ranchers. It a fun way to spend a day. I also love the Buford Canyon area and the Eagle Cap Mountains. I find very little that I won't ride, and enjoy the challenge to see where my horse will take me with the trusting relationship that we have.
Favorite Childhood memories: Growing up riding the Buford Canyon country. I used to ride those canyons moving cattle. Many summers were spent in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. One time, we rode to the top of Eagle Cap Mountain, the highest peak you can ride to. Afterwards, someone said to us "You aren't supposed to ride that trail" we had ridden it for years! Floating the many rivers in the county with family and friends as well as camping most every back road in the Wallowa Whitman Forest.
Favorite places to eat: For a sit down dinner, I love Heavenly's in Enterprise--their steaks are fantastic! For a quick dinner after an evening ride, we love Subway. If our travels take us to Joseph, we like to share a lunch with friends at R& R in Joseph or breakfast at Cheyenne Cafe.
Favorite Events: Near and dear to my heart is Chief Joseph Days Rodeo--always the last full weekend in July. This has been an event that I have loved since I was a little girl. I had a fantastic summer representing Chief Joseph Days in 1990 when I was crowned Queen. We spent the summer attending numerous rodeos and parades and inviting everyone to come and enjoy our beautiful corner of Oregon. Another favorite is the family event of the Wallowa County Fair in Enterprise in August. This little fair knows how to show you a good time and has the home grown feel which warms my soul and has always been a part of my life.
